Building Literacy Skills in Infants and Toddlers

If you work with infants, you can promote their language abilities just by talking, singing, or reading to them, playing with them, and touching and smiling at them.

You should talk with and respond to infants when you are engaging in daily routines with them such as dressing and feeding them. (Berger 1998)2

If you work with toddlers, you will ensure that they will be more likely to make early language sounds if you frequently interact with them. 2

You should read to infants and toddlers one-on-one or in very small groups to help them develop eye focus and listening skills. (Gottschall, 1995)2
